Is It Really Worth Using a UI Kit in Xamarin.Forms or .NET MAUI Projects?

Building an app sounds cool on paper. But once you actually sit down and start working, things get messy fast. Especially when you’re trying to make something that not only works well, but also looks halfway decent. And if you’re using Xamarin.Forms or .NET MAUI, it’s not just about one platform—you’ve got to think about iOS, Android, sometimes even Windows. The design work alone can start to feel endless. That’s where UI Kits come in. But are they actually worth using?

You can probably piece together a few screens, but getting everything to look good and feel consistent? That’s another story. You end up fiddling with padding, trying to get the font sizes right, wasting time on stuff that has nothing to do with your actual app logic. A UI Kit is supposed to help with that. In theory, you just plug them in and go.

The Advantages of Using UI Kits

Some developers swear by them.

  • Time-Saving Templates: Tools like the Grial UI Kit, for example, offer hundreds of templates and layouts. You don’t have to guess how a login page should look or how to organize a settings screen. It’s already there. You just tweak it a bit, connect it to your code, and move on. That saves a ton of time. Especially when you’re trying to meet a deadline, or just want to show your client something that looks real.
  • Professional Design Quality: Another big plus is that UI Kits are usually designed by professionals. Most developers, myself included, aren’t exactly graphic design pros. We know how to make something work, sure, but making it look modern, polished, consistent across all devices? That’s not always our strong suit. A good UI Kit gives you a leg up. It makes your app feel more legit, more put together. That matters. People judge apps fast. A bad-looking UI can turn people away before they even figure out what your app does.
  • Built-in Consistency: There’s also something to be said about consistency. When you build every screen yourself, it’s easy to end up with a Frankenstein app—every screen feels a little different, margins don’t match, colors are just slightly off. But with a kit, everything follows the same style. It’s like having a design guide built in.

Potential Downsides and Considerations

One of the biggest reasons people avoid UI Kits is the cost. Some of them aren’t cheap.

  • Cost and Value: Grial, for example, costs a few hundred bucks depending on what license you need. For a big company, that’s probably nothing. But if you’re a solo dev or just trying to prototype something, it can feel like a lot. And then there’s the risk that you buy it, and it doesn’t fit your needs as well as you hoped.
  • Learning Curve: Also, you don’t just plug in a UI Kit and walk away. Even though it’s meant to save time, there’s still a learning curve. You’ve got to understand how the kit is structured, how to modify things, how to avoid breaking it when you add your own logic. At the beginning, it might feel like you’re doing more work just trying to get everything to cooperate.
  • Customization Limitations: Customization can be a pain too. Most kits are flexible to a point, but if your app has a weird flow or needs something highly custom, you might find yourself fighting against the kit instead of working with it. It’s kind of like moving into a fully furnished apartment—you love most of it, but there’s always that one chair or light fixture you want to get rid of, and it’s bolted down.
  • Performance Impact: Performance-wise, most modern UI Kits are solid, especially if they’re made specifically for Xamarin.Forms or MAUI. But if you’re not careful, you could end up loading a bunch of stuff you don’t need. That can slow things down. It’s usually not a deal-breaker, but it’s something to keep in mind.

.NET MAUI’s Evolution and UI Kits

What about MAUI itself? It’s getting better. More flexible, faster, with a better rendering system. Some devs feel like they can skip the kits and just use what MAUI gives them. With things like hot reload and better layout handling, it’s not as painful to build your own UIs anymore. But that still takes time.
